Then there is the issue of affording treatment, which we help with by offering discounts, payment plans, and insurance billing. With us, we take all possible steps to make treatment work for you.

For decades, straightening teeth meant one thing for the majority of patients: braces. And these braces all looked pretty much the same. Everyone wore them, and many weren’t exactly satisfied with what they offered, despite them delivering good results.
Ultimately, patients wanted choice, and that is where Invisalign stepped in. Here is what you need to know about this system that changed the course of orthodontics.
How Does Invisalign Work? +
Both braces and Invisalign get teeth to move into their ideal position by placing force on the teeth. With braces, it is the wires that exert the pressure. With Invisalign, it is the shape of the aligners. Invisalign aligners are made from clear, hard plastic, so they are great at applying the right amount of pressure. Each aligner is shaped differently, changing the pressure and keeping the teeth moving. Once treatment is complete, the teeth will be in their ideal placements.
How Is Invisalign Made? +
The basis for the creation of your aligners will be a 3D digital scan of your dental anatomy. The scan is imported by Invisalign’s software and based on the rendering, a plan will be made. The doctor then reviews this and tweaks it so it is perfect for the patient. Each step in the process becomes an aligner, which are custom made just for you.
What Makes Invisalign Great? +
Invisalign seems like the ideal form of treatment to many, but before you decide whether or not you are interested, we want you to know more about what makes it so great. While many focus on the aligners being invisible when worn, the system offers a lot more than that, including:
- Plastic aligners do not rub against the soft tissues of the mouth
- Treatment goes faster than with traditional braces
- Invisalign does not change speech
- It can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing
- You make the adjustments when you change aligners, so you see us less often

iCat FLX 3D Cone Beam
Orthodontics is lifechanging for our patients, but historically, it hasn’t been very pleasant. Perhaps the worst part were the impressions. Gloopy, uncomfortable, and not the tastiest, we have never known a patient to enjoy traditional impressions. On top of it all, they are not very accurate, which can result in lower quality treatment.
That is why Orthodontics Only in El Monte has done away with them. At our office, traditional impressions are a thing of the past. Now, we use an intraoral digital scanner and the iCat FLX 3D Cone Beam.
With the iCat, we can take crisp images of all the dental and facial anatomy. This means we can consider the bone structure in addition to the teeth and gums. The 3D images are incredible precise and the whole process uses nothing more than a small wand.
The iCat FLX is a powerful tool to have on hand. We use it for everything from determining the design of lingual braces to addressing problems with restricted airways. Our office ensures that patients get the best and most accurate treatment technology allows.

It wasn’t all that long ago that braces were limited to a single option. Now, we have done away with this one-size-fits-all approach. Here at Orthodontics Only in El Monte, we offer numerous types of braces, making it easy for patients to get treatment that both addresses their problems and fits their lifestyle.
Traditional Metal Braces
These braces are the most common type of braces used. However, they have greatly improved over the years. Once big and awkward, modern options are made from better materials, allowing them to be both smaller and lighter.
Damon braces are similar to traditional braces, but they eliminated the need for ties. This makes them both more effective and more streamlined. While visible, they are less obvious than traditional options.
For some patients, the effectiveness of Damon braces are needed, but they want them to be even less visible. For these individuals, we offer Damon Clear. This system has brackets that blend in with the teeth, so they are difficult for others to see.
Sometimes our patients will ask us why braces need to go on the front of their teeth. Our answer: they don’t. Lingual braces go on the tongue side of the teeth, hiding them from sight. These braces are effective and custom made. The brand we use is Incognito.
While we often get patients worried about how braces look, we also get many who love the idea of sporting them. However, sometimes they just want another color option. That is why we offer gold braces, which are traditional metal braces with a gold coating.
Invisalign is an alternative to braces that delivers results that are just as good without any visible parts. The aligners fit flush against the teeth and use their shape to exert force on the teeth. Treatment tends to be faster than with braces, and the process is easier on the patient.

Children’s Orthodontic Treatment
What is the right age to start orthodontic treatment? That will depend on the patient. In general, children who require orthodontic care will start their treatment around the age of 12. However, there are some children who require early treatment to get the best possible results. Here is what we want parents to know about early intervention for children.
The Importance of Age Seven +
For orthodontic development, age seven is an important milestone. It is at this age that children have a mixture of adult and baby teeth and also have a lot of bone growth left to do. This means that doctors can easily evaluate bite relationships while having the option to harness future bone growth to guide the jaws and teeth. By seeing an orthodontist on or around their seventh birthday, children will have the best window of opportunity to correct severe issues if they are present.
Why Early Treatment Matters ? +
The vast majority of children seen at age seven will not need early treatment. Instead, they will be told that things look good and they should come back again around age 11 or 12. For those where it is recommended, it is vital.
Early treatment is only suggested when the doctor finds that severe abnormalities are present. In other words, when the issue is so significant that it will greatly degrade the quality of life of the child to not have it corrected. While even severe abnormalities can be corrected later in life, when they are, things like surgery and tooth extractions are needed. Early treatment avoids these painful and invasive measures.
What Early Treatment Can Accomplish +
- Guide jaw growth
- Reduce risk of trauma from protruding teeth
- Correct poor oral habits
- Improve facial balance
- Correct crossbites
- Guide placement of permanent teeth
- Make it easier to clean teeth
Early Treatment Appliances
- Rapid Palatal Expander: An appliance that can widen both the upper and lower arches.
- Removable Dentofacial-Orthopedic Appliances: This includes bionators, functional appliance, neck gear, head gear, and reverse pull headgear.
- Lingual Arch: A space maintainer on the lower teeth.
- Braces: The traditional form of treatment.
- Invisalign: Used as a braces alternative when suitable.

Adult Orthodontic Treatment
Many adults are displeased with the way their smile looks and feels but believe they no longer can correct their tooth positions. Because most patients are in their teens, it is easy to assume that once you pass age 20, your time for orthodontic treatment is over. However, there is no such thing as being too old for orthodontics. In fact, about a fifth of all our patients are 21 or older.
What Stops Adults From Seeking Treatment? +
While every patient is unique, when it comes to adults thinking they cannot seek treatment, we find their reasons tend to come down to just three things:
- They think their opportunity for treatment ended once they left their teenage years
- They think braces look unprofessional
- They assume treatment will be more than they can justify spending on themselves
While we understand why patients think these things, these ideas are fueled by misconceptions. None of these reasons should prevent someone from seeking treatment.
Addressing the Misconceptions +
Adults are absolutely eligible for treatment. It is possible that underlying conditions will delay the start of treatment, such as gum and bone disease. However, we can tackle these problems first and then start correcting tooth position.
Can braces be considered unprofessional? Absolutely. However, there is no reason that an adult patients must wear traditional metal braces. We offer other options that are less visible or even fully invisible and well suited to professional environments.
As for cost, first, there are ways to make treatment more affordable. From insurance billing to discounts, we work to make treatment fit your budget. Additionally, braces improve your overall health and self-confidence, so they are very much worth the investment.
